wikipedia
The Accursed Mountains, also known as Bjeshkët e Nemuna or the Albanian Alps, are a mountain range in southeastern Europe, bordering the Adriatic Sea, stretching from northern Albania through western Kosovo to northeastern Montenegro. The highest peak of this range is Maja Jezercë (2,694 m), and it also includes Zla Kolata and Gjeravica, which are the highest mountains in Montenegro and Kosovo, respectively. The range is characterized by steep terrain, glacial features, and a distinct karst landscape. It is one of the least explored mountain regions in Europe. The local population, including many tribes such as the Hoti and Gruda, is deeply connected to pastoral traditions. Numerous legends explain the origin of the name "cursed mountains," often referencing the challenging terrain and harsh climatic conditions. The region boasts rich biodiversity, with many endemic and rare species of flora and fauna, as well as significant water resources, including rivers and alpine lakes that attract tourists. Three national parks in Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro aim to protect this unique diversity. The growth of tourism, particularly in places like Theth, contributes to the revitalization of local communities but also presents environmental challenges, such as illegal logging and hunting. Traditional trade routes have largely been forgotten, while modern infrastructure is slowly improving accessibility to the region. The renowned Peaks of the Balkans hiking trail connects all three countries, offering exceptional views and experiences for adventurers.
