wikipedia
Tivat is a coastal town in Montenegro, situated along the Bay of Kotor, with a population of approximately 10,743 as of 2023. As the youngest town in the region, Tivat boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times, when it was settled by Greeks and Romans. The first written mention of Tivat, then known as Teudo, appeared in the 14th century. The area was significantly influenced by Queen Teuta of the Illyrians, whose summer residence was located nearby. From 1420 to 1797, the town was under the rule of the Republic of Venice, which spurred economic growth and the construction of distinctive Venetian-style buildings, many of which still stand today. In the second half of the 19th century, Tivat entered a period of rapid development, marked by the construction of a naval arsenal by the Austrians. It also served as a military-naval base for various forces, including the Italian and Yugoslav armies. Modern-day Tivat is renowned for its growing marine tourism sector, featuring luxury resorts such as Porto Montenegro, and benefits from its well-developed port infrastructure that supports a range of maritime activities. Key tourist attractions include the summer palace of Buca, the Island of Flowers, Plavi Horizonti Beach, and cultural events like the "Bocce Olympiad" and "Summer Fest." Tivat is also an important transportation hub, home to a modern airport that accommodates a steady flow of tourists. The town is characterized by its ethnic and religious diversity, with a predominant Orthodox community, alongside Catholic and Muslim residents. In recent years, strengthened ties with Russia and Ukraine have led to an influx of people from these countries. Blending contemporary amenities with a rich cultural heritage, Tivat stands out as an attractive destination on the Adriatic coast.
