wikipedia
The Staszic Hard Coal Mine in Katowice, launched on July 10, 1964, is one of the newest mines in the region and part of the Staszic-Wujek Hard Coal Mine. Its history dates back to the 19th century when the mining area was owned by the Winckler family. In the 1950s, in response to the growing demand for coal, a decision was made to build a new mine, which contributed to the development of infrastructure in the Giszowiec area. The architecture of the mine and workers' housing estates, such as Gieschewald, reflected the industrial character of the region, and many of these structures had a modernist appearance. Over the years, environmental protection became an important issue, and the mine gained recognition for its ecological efforts. Culturally, the mine contributed to the development of the local community by organizing various events, including the establishment of a brass band and activities in the sports sector. The mine's management invested in housing for employees and the development of recreational centers, which improved the quality of life for miners and their families. A notable aspect is the tragic history associated with mine disasters, including an explosion in 1978 that resulted in the deaths of four miners. The mine reached its highest output in 1988, producing 4.6 million tons of coal, and its resources were estimated at over 200 million tons. After 1989, due to systemic changes, the mine underwent numerous restructurings, which affected employment and production. Ultimately, in 2021, it was merged with the Wujek mine to form a modern enterprise adapted to contemporary market realities. The Staszic Mine remains an important part of not only Poland's mining history but also local culture, with a rich history that has significantly impacted the life of the regional community.
