16th Warsaw Scouts Troop

The 16th Warsaw Scout Troop named after Zawiszy Czarnego, known as "Szesnastka," is one of the oldest scout troops in Poland, operating continuously since 1911. The troop traces its roots to the Stanisław Staszic School of Technicians in Warsaw. During the interwar period, it transformed into a secondary school, retaining significant architectural heritage, as its headquarters were located in historic buildings on Polna and Noakowskiego Streets, which were important educational facilities in Warsaw. The history of Szesnastka is deeply intertwined with the events of the 20th century, including World War II, when the troop joined the Gray Ranks and participated in the Warsaw Uprising. Many notable figures, such as Jerzy Wądołkowski and Piotr Olewiński, emerged from Szesnastka, highlighting its impact on the Polish scouting movement and national culture. The troop is distinguished by its unique uniforms, which reflect traditions such as Łowicz-style woven ribbons and highlander check patterns. In 2004, Szesnastka earned the title of Troop of the Republic, making it one of the best troops in Poland. Throughout its existence, the 16th WDH has organized numerous events, including rallies and camps, which have become integral to Polish scouting culture. Despite challenges, such as organizational changes within scouting, Szesnastka has maintained its continuity and heritage over the years, developing new groups like cub scout packs. Interestingly, the troop names its patrols after Polish animals, fostering a sense of identity while paying homage to Poland's fauna. Szesnastka also engages in modern activities, such as maintaining a website and a presence on social media, demonstrating its adaptability and openness to changes in the world. Today, the troop operates as Szczep 16, enabling the further development of the scouting movement in Warsaw by engaging youth in values such as teamwork, friendship, and responsibility.
