Dr. Antoni Jurasz University Hospital No. 1 in Bydgoszcz is the largest public healthcare institution in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region, with a history dating back to 1937. Built as a modern municipal hospital and designed by Bogdan Raczkowski, it was a response to the medical needs of the Pomerania region. During the interwar period, it was the largest and most modern hospital in Poland, offering six departments, including innovative ones for the 1930s such as orthopedics and ophthalmology. In 1938, it hospitalized 3,889 patients. After World War II, the hospital underwent numerous changes, becoming a center for rehabilitation and oncological treatment. Thanks to expansion and modernization in the 1970s and 1980s, there was a significant increase in the number of beds and the introduction of new clinics. In 2005, the hospital adopted its current name, and its mission became the integration of educational and clinical activities. Today, the hospital has 27 clinics and 37 outpatient departments, with specializations including transplantology, oncology, neurorehabilitation, and modern psychiatric treatment. A unique achievement of the institution is its bone marrow transplantation unit, which performs specialized procedures, transforming the treatment of leukemia in children. The hospital is also distinguished by its Trauma Center, which serves approximately 1 million people, providing state-of-the-art medical support in emergencies. In 2023, the first Mental Health Center in Bydgoszcz was established, based on a modern care model as part of the national mental health protection program. The hospital also has a helipad for emergency helicopters, ensuring rapid transport in urgent cases. The hospital's patron is Antoni Jurasz, a pioneer of Polish laryngology, whose work significantly influenced the development of this medical field. The hospital's architecture from the 1930s retains modern elements for that time, and its recent expansion has enhanced its educational and medical capabilities, creating an integrated medical center in Bydgoszcz. Through its achievements and growth, the hospital continues to play a key role in the regional healthcare system.
