wikipedia
Bydgoskie Przedmieście in Toruń, also known as Bromberger Vorstadt, is an area with a rich history and diverse architecture, located on the right bank of the Vistula River, characterized by Art Nouveau and modernist buildings as well as half-timbered construction techniques. From the mid-19th century, during Toruń's intensive development, Bydgoskie Przedmieście became a place of elegant residences, villas, and guesthouses, in contrast to the industrial Chełmińskie and Jakubskie Przedmieście districts. This area was once a suburban settlement connected to Bydgoszcz, and its name and character remain as a testament to bygone times. Between 1890–1910 and 1920–1939, the area experienced dynamic development, including the introduction of urban plans that lifted building height restrictions. The district is home to the City Park established in 1817 and the Zoobotanical Garden, the oldest facility of its kind in Poland, founded in 1797. Bydgoskie Przedmieście also became the residence of many urban elites, including artists and professionals such as Witkacy and Przybyszewski. After 1945, many monuments were devastated, but after 1989, systematic revitalization began. Today, the district is a vibrant place with well-developed infrastructure, including schools, kindergartens, and commercial facilities. Bydgoskie Przedmieście is well connected to the rest of the city, offering bus and tram transport, as well as convenient access to national and regional roads. There is no shortage of cultural institutions, such as the Municipal Animal Shelter and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Nicolaus Copernicus University. With over 500 historic buildings, including Art Nouveau tenements, wooden villas, and historical sites related to the Polish Army and forts, Bydgoskie Przedmieście is an important point on Toruń's tourist map. The district has retained its elite character and is an example of a successful blend of history and modernity, making it an attractive place for both residents and tourists.
