wikipedia
Bydgoszcz Wschód is a district located in the Lower Terrace of Bydgoszcz, bordering other neighborhoods such as Bartodzieje, Leśne, Kapuściska, and Zimne Wody. The district consists of a southern part, bounded by Łęczycka Street, the Brda River, and railway tracks, and a northern part, surrounded by railway lines and the Gdański Forest. Its character is primarily industrial and storage-oriented, with numerous wholesale outlets, retail points, and hypermarkets, while residential buildings are mainly single-family homes. The name Bydgoszcz Wschód reflects the historical position of this area as the easternmost part of Bydgoszcz before the incorporation of Fordon. In the past, the district was known as Kapuściska Małe, and during World War II, it was called Hohenholm. In the 19th century, the Bydgoszcz Wschód area hosted a horse racing track, which, after being rebuilt in the 1920s, became a popular venue for sporting events. Horse races were organized there until 1931, when, due to the economic crisis and the destruction of the grandstand by lightning, the track was permanently closed and converted into allotment gardens. Interestingly, the track once hosted races for the Bydgoszcz garrison, and its infrastructure attracted large audiences, contributing to the development of local recreation. In the western part of the track, there was a landfill, whose history is commemorated today by street names such as Wyścigowa. In the 1930s, a railway workers' housing estate was built on Sygnałowa Street, highlighting the importance of rail transport in the area. Modern Bydgoszcz Wschód boasts well-developed transportation infrastructure, including a railway station and a tram-bus loop. Key commercial facilities in the district include Galeria Pomorska and Obi, which attract both residents and visitors, while notable manufacturing entities include Bydgoskie Fabryki Sklejek and Tele-Fonika Kable. The modern tram viaduct, opened in 2016, serves as an additional transportation asset, integrating various modes of transport into a single network. Thus, Bydgoszcz Wschód is a place with a rich history and a developing industrial and commercial character, where interesting remnants of the past continue to shape the district's identity.
