The Bydgoszcz Zoo, formerly known as the Polish Fauna Garden, is a specialized zoo with a focus on breeding native animals. It was established on July 19, 1978, within the Forest Park of Culture and Recreation, following a decision made by the Social Council in 1976. Initially, it primarily showcased native birds and mammals, and its collection gradually expanded to include species such as brown bears and lynxes. The zoo developed an educational focus, offering a Mini Zoo for children and numerous educational programs in collaboration with universities. Today, the Bydgoszcz Zoo is home to over 700 specimens from 130 vertebrate species, including protected animals. Notable features include a diverse collection of birds, particularly birds of prey, as well as an extensive reptile and amphibian section. In 2014, a modern aquarium and terrarium pavilion was opened, and in 2018, plans were announced to construct a polar exhibit featuring seals and penguins. One of the main attractions is the Mini Zoo, which allows close interaction with harmless animals. The zoo also boasts architectural elements such as thoughtfully designed walking paths and artificial ponds, creating a pleasant visiting experience. The emblem of the zoo is a white stork on a green background, symbolizing its local character. Today, the Bydgoszcz Zoo focuses on biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and active collaboration with various institutions, making it an interesting destination in the city.
