The Chełmiec Commune, located in the northern part of Nowy Sącz County in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, covers an area of 11,201 hectares and has approximately 28,834 inhabitants. There are 1,099 business entities operating in the commune, with the private sector dominating and a diverse range of activities, including trade, construction, and services. Chełmiec comprises 27 localities, with Paszyn and Trzetrzewina being the largest in terms of area. The commune lies at the intersection of three macroregions—the Western Beskids, the Central Beskids, and the Central Beskid Foothills—which contribute to its varied landscape. The history of the commune dates back to the 13th century, when the first written records of localities associated with Saint Kinga appeared. During World War II, Chełmiec was a site of partisan fighting, earning the village recognition for its merits. The commune is home to numerous historical monuments, such as the wooden church in Chomranice from 1692, the Morawski Manor from the 17th/18th century, and the larch manor in Wielogłowy. Chełmiec also hosts numerous cultural events, including nativity play reviews, artistic competitions, and local festivals that promote traditions and craftsmanship. Interestingly, in 2018, there were plans to grant Chełmiec town status, but the process was halted due to controversies surrounding public consultations. The commune places great emphasis on promoting local culture and traditions, reflected in numerous events such as Chełmiec Days or St. Nicholas Day celebrations for children with disabilities. In 2019, the Astrocentrum was opened, further enriching the commune's cultural offerings.
