Chełm is a rural commune located in the Lublin Voivodeship, within Chełm County, with its administrative seat in the village of Pokrówka. In 2020, the commune had a population of 15,099. It covers an area of 221.82 km², of which 67% is agricultural land and 20% is forested. The commune is home to diverse nature reserves, such as Stawska Góra, Brzeźno, Bagno Serebryskie, and Torfowisko Sobowice, which protect rare species of plants and birds. Chełm boasts a rich cultural scene; since 1986, the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury (Municipal Cultural Center) in Żółtańce has been operating, with branches in several villages. The commune is also religiously active, with the presence of the Roman Catholic Church, the Baptist Church of Christians, and Jehovah's Witnesses. Historically, Chełm Commune has much to offer, along with numerous village administrations (sołectwa), such as Depułtycze Królewskie, Strupin Duży, and Staw. It is worth mentioning the Chełm-Depułtycze Królewskie Airport located in the area, which may attract aviation enthusiasts. The commune borders the city of Chełm and several other communes, contributing to its development and regional integration. Thanks to its rich natural resources and culture, Chełm is an interesting point on the map of the Lublin region.
