wikipedia
Chęcin Castle, built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, is located in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship and towers over the town of Chęciny. As a fortress, the castle played a key role in the political and military life of the Kingdom of Poland, particularly during the reign of Władysław Łokietek, who granted it to the Bishop of Kraków and later took control of the castle. Over the centuries, it hosted assemblies of nobles and served as a rallying point for troops heading to war with the Teutonic Knights. As a state prison, it held notable captives, underscoring its political significance. In the 16th century, the castle began to decline, and the Swedish wars brought further destruction. Restoration efforts began in the 19th century, with revitalization taking place between 2013 and 2015. Architecturally, the castle was designed on an irregular polygonal plan, featuring distinctive towers and high defensive walls. A deep well carved into the rock also highlights its well-thought-out defensive architecture. In popular culture, the castle has served as a filming location and musical backdrop, as well as a literary inspiration. In 1971, the Polish Post Office issued a stamp featuring the castle as part of a series dedicated to Polish castles. An interesting fact is the discovery of tower foundations that may be the oldest part of the castle, emphasizing its rich history and regional importance.
