wikipedia
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Łódź, built between 1887 and 1897, is the oldest Catholic church in the city and serves as the seat of the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Constructed in the Vistula-Baltic style, it was designed by Konstanty Wojciechowski and largely financed by Łódź industrialists. The church is distinguished by its red brick façade and three-nave layout, complete with a transept and two towers. Exterior stained-glass windows and pointed arches give it a distinctive Neo-Gothic appearance. Inside, visitors will find an ornately decorated main altar housing a triptych depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, as well as other sacred elements, such as a statue of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. The crypt contains the remains of the Servant of God Stanisława Leszczyńska. The church has witnessed many significant historical events, including shelling during World War I and its conversion into a warehouse and sorting facility during World War II. It survived substantial damage and is now a registered historical monument, surrounded by a square that includes the preserved tomb of Maciej Wyszyński, underscoring its historical importance as a place of worship and local heritage. In recent years, restoration and conservation work has been carried out to preserve this important cultural landmark for future generations. An interesting fact is that the church is part of the network of Lenten station churches in Łódź, and there have been instances in its history when the Blessed Sacrament was safeguarded there during artillery attacks.
