wikipedia
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Szczecinek, located at 3 Maja Street, is a neo-Gothic temple built between 1905 and 1908 according to the design of Berlin architect Oskar Hoßfeld. It was originally constructed as an Evangelical church dedicated to St. Nicholas. The building is characterized by its massive yet light structure, high buttresses, soaring windows, and pointed-arch ornaments. The eastern part of the church is closed off by a hexagonal chancel, while a slender 78-meter-high tower dominates the western side. The main altar features a cabinet-like structure, which highlights its architectural qualities. The Parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established on June 9, 1973, and today it is the largest Catholic community in Szczecinek, with approximately 13,998 faithful. The church's history is rich; after World War II, in 1945, it was handed over to the Roman Catholic Church. It was consecrated the same year, and the solemn dedication was performed by Bishop Jan Gałecki in 1995. A notable feature is the organ built by Paul Voelkner, which in 1908 was equipped with 35 voices and 1,670 pipes. Over the years, the instrument's condition deteriorated, leading to a comprehensive renovation in 2011 that was completed in 2014. During this restoration, many parts were replaced and refurbished, restoring their original brilliance. As an important landmark in Szczecinek, the church combines elements of culture and history, standing as a witness to the many changes the region has undergone.
