wikipedia
The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Bydgoszcz, located at Piastowski Square, is a Neo-Baroque temple built between 1910 and 1913 on the order of the Prussian authorities, who committed to constructing a church for the German community in the city. The architect was Oskar Hossfeld, and the building combines Neo-Baroque features with the architecture of Northern German Baroque. The church has a basilica layout, with three naves and a transept, as well as a distinctive dome. Its interior is adorned with rich architectural details, including cartouches, angel sculptures, and paintings. The consecration took place on June 19, 1913, and since 1924, it has been the seat of a new parish. After 1920, the church transitioned to serving the Polish community, a role it maintained until the end of World War II, during which it remained undamaged. A major interior renovation was carried out between 1982 and 1988, and the façade was modernized in 2002. The church has become a hub for cultural initiatives, including retreats for artistic communities since 1992. It houses six altars, three bells, and an organ, which has undergone several modernizations. Notably, the organ features an electric drive, and both the instrument and the bells were created in 1912, highlighting their historical value. The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is not only a key landmark in the city center but also an important element of Bydgoszcz's culture and history.
