wikipedia
The Church of the Transfiguration in Wąsosz is a Roman Catholic parish church built between 1508 and 1534, funded by the parish priest Andrzej Noskowski, who later became the Bishop of Płock. It replaced an earlier wooden church that stood on the same site. Designed in the Late Gothic style, the church features five bays and three naves, forming a pseudo-basilica layout. Externally, it is characterized by buttresses, and atop its ridge sits a small bell turret (sygnaturka) dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The interior is adorned with pointed arch arcades and neo-Gothic rib vaults. The polychrome work, executed by Władysław Drapiewski in 1926, showcases ornamental and figurative motifs representative of the post-Art Nouveau style. The church's furnishings, in the neo-Gothic style, date to the early 20th century, including the main altar with paintings depicting the Transfiguration of Christ, the Vision of St. Francis, and St. Rosalia from 1908. The organ, built in 1894 by the firm Blomberg & Son, is another valuable feature. The bell tower houses four bells: two larger ones cast in 1929, a small bell from 1718, and a signal bell from 1852. In 2020, the bells were restored by the company Rduch Bells & Clocks. The church's history has been turbulent; it was destroyed by fires several times, including in 1710 and 1834, but each time it was renovated and rebuilt. It was briefly closed in 1819 due to poor technical condition. Notable modifications include the installation of vaults and the remodeling of the sacristy in 1900, and after 1912, the addition of a neo-Gothic porch and annexes near the presbytery. Culturally significant, the church stands as an architectural gem of the region and a testament to local history. Its surroundings include historically interesting elements, such as the gable wall and the bell tower, with a photograph from around 1915 illustrating the temple's historical context.
