Ciężkowice

Ciężkowice is a picturesque town in Poland, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, within the Tarnów district, on the Ciężkowice Plateau by the Biała River. The settlement boasts a rich history dating back to its town charter in 1348, though it lost its municipal rights in 1934, only to regain them in 1998. Known for its preserved medieval urban layout, the town is listed on the Lesser Poland Wooden Architecture Trail, highlighting its architectural value. Among its most important landmarks are the classicist town hall, the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle, and wooden houses with arcades, characteristic of this part of Lesser Poland. Ciężkowice is also home to numerous cultural institutions, such as the Krystyna and Włodzimierz Tomków Nature Museum, where visitors can admire extensive collections of insects, birds, and hunting trophies. Another point of interest is the Church of the Merciful Jesus, which has served as a sanctuary since 2003, housing a miraculous image of the Merciful Christ. The town witnessed significant historical events, including fierce battles during World War I, which left behind five war cemeteries. Modern Ciężkowice is developing its tourism sector, particularly around the Skamieniałe Miasto (Petrified City) Nature Reserve, famous for its rock formations and beautiful hiking and cycling trails. The town also hosts fairs that hark back to its trading traditions from the 14th century. An interesting fact is that Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the renowned composer and politician, contributed to the cultural development of Ciężkowice by funding local initiatives.
