wikipedia
Cieszyn Castle Hill, also known as Castle Mountain, rises to 298 meters above sea level and is a significant landmark in the Silesian Foothills. For centuries, the hill served defensive and settlement purposes, with its history dating back to ancient times. In the 10th century, a settlement was established here, which quickly evolved into a defensive stronghold. The Romanesque rotunda of St. Nicholas, built in the 11th century and now one of the oldest architectural monuments in Poland, symbolizes the historical importance of this site. Castle Hill was the seat of a castellan and later, after the establishment of the Duchy of Cieszyn in the 14th century, became a princely castle. The Gothic Piast Tower, preserved to this day, dates back to the castle's expansion in the 14th century. However, the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century led to the ruin of the structures on the hill, and the castle gradually deteriorated over the next two centuries. In the 19th century, on the initiative of Archduke Charles Habsburg, the remains of the castle were demolished and replaced with a Neoclassical palace and a romantic park. In the 20th century, the rotunda and the Piast Tower were renovated, and the palace was converted into a music school. In the 21st century, reconstruction efforts continued, uncovering fragments of the former castle and establishing the seat of the Cieszyn Castle, further enhancing this historic site. Castle Hill is not only a place rich in history but also a cultural attraction, offering panoramic views of Cieszyn and the Silesian Beskids, drawing tourists and history enthusiasts alike.
