wikipedia
The Cis Donnersmarcka is a monumental specimen of the European yew, growing in a forest within the Świerklaniec Forest District, near Kalety in the Silesian Voivodeship. Its circumference measures 222 cm, its height is 16 m, and its age is estimated to be 500–600 years. The tree was first described in 1906 by the German botanist Theodor Schube in his monograph "Waldbuch von Schlesien," where its circumference was recorded as 1.43 m. In subsequent years, the yew was mentioned in various publications, highlighting its exceptional natural and historical value. At one time, it was considered one of the most important yews in Silesia, and its location in a dense forest settlement—one of the remnants of the Silesian Primeval Forest—contributed to its survival. The Donnersmarck family, who owned the forests, took measures to protect the tree as early as the beginning of the 20th century, implementing various safeguards such as arched rails and rope bindings, which helped maintain the tree in good condition for a long time. Official protection of the yew began in 1930, and it was designated a natural monument in 1989. Today, the Cis Donnersmarcka is a symbol of the region's natural heritage, and its history has been immortalized in local culture, including folk songs. In 2002, an initiative was launched to establish a yew sanctuary in the area, aimed at preserving this valuable species. Despite the passage of time, the yew remains in satisfactory health, although part of its crown has died. This unique tree attracts the attention of both nature enthusiasts and tourists, serving as an important element of the region's natural heritage.
