Kompania Węglowa SA, headquartered in Katowice, was established in 2003 through the transformation of defunct coal mining companies. It was the largest mining enterprise in Europe until 2016, when the majority of its facilities were taken over by Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG). Kompania Węglowa was engaged in a variety of activities, including coal mining, heat production, and telecommunications. Its structure included numerous facilities, such as the Repair and Production Plant in Bieruń and several combined heat and power plants, which were crucial components of the local energy infrastructure. The history of Kompania Węglowa is rich and marked by challenges, such as the restructuring of the mining markets that took place between 2010 and 2016. Over the years, the company struggled with financial difficulties, including significant losses resulting from low operational efficiency and high operating costs. Among the interesting facts, at its peak, it employed around 55,000 people, with an annual extraction capacity of up to 40 million tons. Despite its financial struggles in recent years, Kompania Węglowa remains an important reference point on the map of Polish mining, and its history stands as a testament to the changes in the industry's structure.
