wikipedia
The Crooked Forest is a unique natural monument covering an area of approximately 0.33 hectares, located near Nowe Czarnowo and the Dolna Odra Power Plant in the Gryfino County of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. This area is known for over 50 deformed Scots pines with unusual, curved trunks bent at an angle of about 90 degrees at a height of approximately 20 cm above the ground. The curvature of some trees reaches up to 3 meters, and their total height is about 11-12 meters. These tree stands were planted in the 1930s, most likely in 1934. One of the leading theories for their unusual shape is that they were intentionally shaped by humans for woodworking purposes, known as "krzywulki," used in the production of furniture, boats, or sleds. Another theory, presented by Professor Kremer on the program Galileo, suggests that the trees were deliberately cut at the age of 6-10 years for use as Christmas trees, which caused their characteristic curvature. In recent years, the Crooked Forest has been revitalized through a collaboration between the Gryfino Municipality, the Gryfino Forest District, and the Polish Energy Group, which allocated 250,000 PLN in 2020 for the site's restoration and its adaptation for tourism. In 2021, a replacement area was established where 1,000 young trees were planted, which will undergo artificial bending. Additionally, the Gryfino Municipality published an illustrated guide to the Crooked Forest, featuring popular theories about the origin of these remarkable trees. With its uniquely shaped trees and mysterious history, the Crooked Forest is an important part of the local natural and cultural heritage, attracting tourists from all over the country.
