Obrońców Pokoju is one of the newer districts of Gliwice, established in 2003 from a part of Szobiszowice. The district has a suburban character and is characterized primarily by buildings constructed using the "large-panel" technology, featuring the large Obrońców Pokoju housing estate, the pre-war German villa-style Wojciecha estate, and the modern Graniczna estate. The streets are named with the intention of honoring historical events, as well as local flora and fauna. The district is home to the Łabędzki Forest, which separates the built-up area from the surrounding villages. The history of Obrońców Pokoju dates back to earlier times when these areas were part of the villages of Szobiszowice and Ligota Szobiszowska. The current buildings were constructed in the 1980s, following the displacement of the German population and administrative changes after World War II. The new housing estate developed as a result of urban planning changes, and some historical structures, such as former military shooting ranges, were destroyed. The district has well-developed public infrastructure, including Primary School No. 39 and a post office. Public transportation is served by various bus lines, with a terminal stop at Paderewskiego Street. The district also features a bicycle path and a city bike station, although the latter was relocated due to low usage. Obrońców Pokoju is a place with a fascinating history, preserving elements of local tradition while offering modern infrastructure, making it an attractive area to live in.
