Flora Statue in Szczecin

The Statue of Flora in Szczecin is a Baroque monument located in White Eagle Square. It is attributed to Johann Georg Glume and was carved from Saxon sandstone around 1730, although some sources suggest it may date back to the 1780s. The statue depicts Flora, the Roman goddess of spring and fertility, holding a basket of flowers, accompanied by two putti. One of the putti is climbing a cornucopia, while the other arranges flowers in the basket. Originally, the monument adorned the attic of the Grumbkow Palace and was later moved to the palace garden. In 1906, it was relocated to Żeromski Park. After World War II, in 1945, the statue was discovered in the ruins of a museum, missing its head, hands, and the figures of the putti. It was restored in 1953 and subsequently relocated multiple times over the following decades—in the 1970s, it was moved near the Royal Gate and later to the intersection of Panieńska and Kuśnierska Streets. Finally, in 1991, after thorough conservation, the statue was placed in White Eagle Square. The Statue of Flora is not only an important part of Szczecin's cultural heritage but also a testament to Western Baroque traditions and the city's architectural transformations. Its history reflects changing attitudes toward art and the significance of public space across different eras. Interestingly, the monument survived decades of neglect and damage, making it a symbol of resilience and renewal for the local community.
