wikipedia
Fort X of the Toruń Fortress, also known as the Batterie Grünthalmühle (Coastal Battery), is an interesting defensive structure built between 1889 and 1892. Its main purpose was to secure control over the Vistula River valley and protect the railway lines leading to Bydgoszcz and Solec Kujawski. Architecturally, the fort stands out with its earth battery equipped with six artillery positions capable of accommodating 12 cm caliber cannons. The structure also includes a brick, ten-chamber shelter designed for an 80-person crew, partially surrounded by a water-filled moat. Interestingly, this is the only fort in Toruń without infantry observation posts, making it unique among other forts in the region. It was also used for ammunition storage and features four magazines. From a historical perspective, the fort is an important element of Toruń's military history and its strategic role during a period of intense militarization in the area. Today, Fort X is not only a testament to the defensive architecture of its time but also an intriguing site for history and architecture enthusiasts, attracting tourists and military history buffs alike.
