wikipedia
Fort XI of the Toruń Fortress, previously known as Fort V and Grosser Kurfürst, was built between 1879 and 1884 as a standard artillery fort with a pentagonal layout. Located on Poznańska Street, it was designed to strengthen the left-bank defense of Toruń, equipped with 20 cannons placed on open platforms. Their firing range covered areas such as Cierpice, Nieszawka, and Gniewkowo. The fort was surrounded by a dry moat and earthen embankments, making it a well-camouflaged defensive point. During its active years, it could accommodate up to 650 artillerymen and an infantry unit, and also served as barracks. An upgrade in 1894 improved its resistance to shelling, and in 1911, it was encircled with barbed wire. After World War I, the fort remained unused until 1922, when it was taken over by the Polish Army, which used it as soldier quarters. In 1960, parts of the embankments were dismantled and the moat was filled in. Today, the fort is privately owned and neglected, leading to its ongoing deterioration. An interesting discovery was made in 1999: three crates containing German ammunition and sniper rifles were found, highlighting the site's historical significance. Despite its current state, the fort remains a valuable example of 19th-century military architecture and local history, though its lack of protection and accessibility continue to pose a risk of further damage.
