wikipedia
Fort XIII of the Toruń Fortress, previously known as VI Winrich von Kniprode, is a main artillery fort built between 1882 and 1885, intended to defend Toruń from the south. Its architecture, an example of old fortifications with a distinctive bastion trace and open artillery positions, makes it an interesting military structure. The fort is characterized by numerous artillery positions, including many armored batteries, and its considerable firing range extended to nearby towns. A significant aspect of the fort's history were the modernization efforts that began in 1894, which increased its resistance to 150 mm caliber artillery fire, demonstrating its adaptation to changing military conditions. The facility was also gradually equipped with modern installations, such as electricity, and its walls received additional reinforcements. After World War I, the fort was handed over to the Polish Army, and its purpose changed according to needs, from interning prisoners of war to housing soldiers. In 1939, the fort played a role in the command structures of the Pomeranian Army, gaining recognition but also becoming a target of bombings. After World War II, the fort remained in fairly good condition, and despite many changes, including the removal of most equipment, many original elements of the furnishings remained in place. Today, the fort is located on military grounds as part of the 1st Materiel and Technical Base, reflecting its longevity and strategic importance over the years. Interestingly, despite numerous modernizations and a history of militarization, the fort's architecture still bears traces of the past and remains an intriguing site for enthusiasts of history and defensive architecture.
