wikipedia
Fort XIV of the Toruń Fortress, named after Józef Bem and originally known as VIa Hermann Balk, is an artillery fort constructed between 1888 and 1892. Located on Włocławska Street, it formed part of Toruń's southern defensive line. Its architecture relies on brick and concrete, and its two cannons could fire as far as the village of Czerniewice-Brzoza. In the interwar period, the fort was named after Józef Dwernicki and underwent minor conservation work between 1920 and 1926. Surrounded by a wet moat and a fortification fence, it served as an ammunition storage facility both during Prussian times and after Poland regained independence. During World War II, the fort was used as a hospital for German prisoners of war from Western countries. After the war, the fort was acquired by a private owner in the early 21st century. Combining architectural value with a rich history, the fort is an important part of Toruń's cultural heritage, and its story reflects the complex fate of the region throughout various historical periods. Interestingly, for a long time, the fort was not only a military facility but also a witness to many significant events, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.
