Freedom Square in Racibórz, historically known as a hub for various cultural and commercial events, is located on the edge of the old town. In the past, it was the site of an animal market, and its history dates back to the times when the Great Gate, one of the representative gates of the Racibórz stronghold, stood there. In 1818, the gate was dismantled, and the square transformed into a meeting and celebration venue, leading to its designation as Polko-Platz in 1884, named after Adolf Polko, a councilor who significantly influenced its development. In the 1930s, the name was changed to Horst-Wessel-Platz, and after 1945, the previous name was restored. Architecturally, the square is surrounded by eclectic tenement houses, with a notable central feature being a glacial erratic boulder, a natural monument brought here in 1934. The square’s flora includes remarkable specimens of the honey locust and the ginkgo biloba tree. The square has a triangular layout, with a roundabout to the north, and covers an area of approximately 65 ares. Various structures have been preserved here, including a neoclassical building that once housed the customs office and several tenements in the Neo-Renaissance and eclectic styles, featuring rich architectural details. One of the buildings is home to the Pod Łabędziem Pharmacy, whose tradition dates back to 1875, with the original swan sculpture being its distinctive feature. The roundabout serves as an important transportation hub, and the entire area is conducive to strolls and enjoying local dining establishments. An interesting aspect is the history of the square’s transformations and its natural attractions, which draw both residents and tourists.
