Funeral home in Łódź

The funeral home in Łódź is an exceptionally important architectural and cultural landmark, located in the eastern part of the New Jewish Cemetery. Built in 1898 on the initiative of Mina Konsztat, the widow of Herman, it is the largest building of its kind in Poland and one of the largest in the world. It was designed by architect Adolf Zeligson, who created a structure divided into separate sections for men and women. Unfortunately, during World War II, the building was devastated, and after the war, it remained abandoned for many years, falling into ruin. It was not until 1987 that the Nissenbaum Family Foundation undertook a major renovation, restoring the building to its former glory. Today, the central part of the building still serves its original function, while the side rooms house a photo gallery and utility spaces. An interesting feature is the original 19th-century horse-drawn hearse located inside. The funeral home is not only a testament to the rich history of the Jewish community in Łódź but also represents cultural values related to memory and tradition. Its inclusion in the provincial register of historic monuments underscores its significance as a valuable architectural heritage site.
