Gdynia Maritime University

The Gdynia Maritime University, formerly known as the Maritime Higher School and the Maritime Academy, is a prestigious Polish maritime university that educates personnel for the maritime economy, including future merchant navy officers and specialists in various technical and management fields. The university was founded in 1920 in Tczew, where it began operations as the Maritime School. In 1930, it was relocated to Gdynia, where a modern complex was built on Morska Street. Throughout its history, the institution has undergone significant transformations, including its conversion into the Maritime Higher School in 1968, followed by the Maritime Academy in 2001, and finally the Gdynia Maritime University in 2018. Over the years, the university has significantly contributed to the development of the Polish merchant navy and maritime-land operations. Architecturally, the campus in Gdynia is characterized by modern design, with buildings tailored to educational and technological needs. The founders' emphasis on personnel training is a notable aspect of its history, which, even during wartime, did not lead to stagnation but rather a relocation of activities to England. The university boasts a rich fleet of training vessels, including the famous sailboat "Dar Młodzieży." Currently, it offers studies across four faculties, and its curriculum includes many modern fields such as space and satellite technologies. The university places a strong emphasis on practical education, providing students with access to specialized research and training ships as well as collaboration programs with the maritime sector. An interesting aspect is that until 2009, students participated in mandatory military training, and the institution continues to enjoy high prestige in the educational community and among maritime shipping professionals.
