wikipedia
Godkowo, a village in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, previously known as Göttchendorf, has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The exact date of the village's foundation falls between 1320 and 1331, when it was established under Chełmno law by the Elbląg commander Hermann von Oettingen. Over the centuries, the settlement went through various stages of development, including numerous destructions as a result of wars, such as the Polish-Teutonic War and the Polish-Swedish wars, which significantly affected the population size. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Godkowo became a center of local social and economic events, with craftsmen such as carpenters, blacksmiths, and tailors, as well as the development of infrastructure, including a post office. After World War II, the village changed owners, and its inhabitants were mainly Poles arriving from central Poland and the Vilnius region. Over time, many new facilities were added to the village, including an Orthodox church that was relocated from Kupna, with its reconstruction taking place from 2012 to 2013, resulting in a consecration ceremony. Architecturally, Godkowo is characterized by buildings from the end of the 19th century, including a former school that now serves as a community center. The village represents an interesting combination of history, culture, and traditions of the region, being a place of not only local but also historical significance. Interestingly, Godkowo has preserved relics of old architecture, as well as a community that still cultivates its history and traditions.
