Gołańcz is an urban-rural municipality located in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, within Wągrowiec County, with the town of Gołańcz serving as its administrative seat. As a result of administrative changes between 1975 and 1998, the municipality was temporarily incorporated into the Piła Voivodeship. According to data from the end of June 2004, the population of the municipality was 8,407. It covers an area of 192.13 km², dominated by agricultural land (76%) and forests (15%), making it a significant agricultural component of the region and accounting for 18.46% of the total area of Wągrowiec County. Gołańcz combines historical and cultural aspects.
