The Grand Theater in Łódź, the largest theater in the city, specializing in opera, ballet, operetta, and musicals, is the second-largest opera stage in Poland. Located at Dąbrowski Square, its headquarters is a monumental building constructed over 17 years, starting in 1949 and completed in 1966. The theater's architecture, an example of socialist realism, features a facade supported by massive pillars and clear references to pre-war design solutions. The theater boasts a stage measuring 26 meters in width and 39.5 meters in depth, equipped with modern lighting and acoustic equipment, enabling the production of a variety of performances.
From a cultural perspective, the Grand Theater organizes the international dance festival – Łódź Ballet Meetings, which attracts leading ballet companies from around the world. In its rich history, which dates back to the Łódź Opera from 1954–1966, the theater has hosted over 300 premieres, including acclaimed productions of works by contemporary composers and opera classics. The theater has also been the venue for many important artistic events, such as the Camerimage International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography and the Grand Prix Jazz Melomani.
Interesting facts about the theater include its inauguration, which was attended by the world's first female cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, as well as the involvement of the Naval Shipyard in Gdynia in the production of building elements. Since 1991, the theater has been a cultural institution of the Łódź Voivodeship Self-Government and remains an important cultural center with a rich tradition and artistic ambitions.
