wikipedia
Dom Hilarego Majewskiego is a Neo-Renaissance tenement house located at 11 Włókiennicza Street in Łódź, built between 1883 and 1886. Originally, it served as the villa of the city architect, Hilary Majewski, and was later converted into a multi-family residential building. After Majewski's death in 1902, the property changed hands multiple times, including owners such as Edward Herst and Wojciech Oppeln-Bronikowski, and for many years, it also functioned as part of the municipal housing stock. Adjacent to the tenement was a plot of land that Majewski had intended to develop, though these plans were never realized. In 1947, the outbuilding and other utility structures were demolished, and in the late 1950s, the staircase was modernized—converted into toilets and the attic adapted into apartments. Over the years, many of the stucco decorations were damaged by residents. In 2022, a revitalization of the building began, concluding in August 2023 at a cost of 14 million złoty. During the renovation, original features such as stucco decorations, marbles, staircase ornaments, and polychromes were preserved, restoring the historical character of the structure. The tenement is an example of Łódź's rich architectural heritage and bears traces of its cultural legacy. Interestingly, for decades the building played various roles in the city's life, and its evolution from a villa to a multi-family residence illustrates the social and urban changes that have taken place in Łódź.
