The Jan Kochanowski Theatre in Opole is a professional theatrical institution with a long history, dating back to 1945, when it was established as the Juliusz Słowacki Municipal Theatre. In 1950, its name was changed to the State Theatre of the Opole Region, and in 1975, a new building was opened on Theatre Square, coinciding with the premiere of "Przedwiośnie" directed by Stanisław Brejdygant. The building stands out for its architecture, including a large stage with a unique system of movable traps, which is a rarity in Europe. The theatre organizes numerous cultural events and festivals, gaining recognition on the international stage, with performances such as "Macbeth" and "The Odyssey" presented at festivals in South Korea and London. Between 2019 and 2021, the theatre underwent a comprehensive renovation, modernizing both its interiors and technical facilities. It currently features several stages, including the Modelatornia, which is an experimental space dedicated to promoting innovative artistic projects. The theatre's philosophy is inspired by the work of Jerzy Grotowski, and an annual competition for theatrical projects in the Modelatornia supports creativity and innovation in the arts. The artistic ensemble currently consists of numerous talented actors, and throughout its history, the theatre has also hosted outstanding artists, underscoring its importance on the Polish theatrical scene.
