wikipedia
Janów Podlaski Stud, established in 1817 in Wygoda, is the oldest state-owned Arabian horse stud in Poland. It is located within a complex of classicist stables that spans 2,500 hectares, accounting for approximately 18% of the Janów Podlaski municipality. Throughout its history, closely tied to its architectural heritage, brick stables such as the "Czołowa" and "Zegarowa" were built in the 19th century based on designs by Henryk Marconi. The stud was also an important hippological center where, during the 19th century, purebred Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horses were bred. Historically, it was established in response to the loss of horses during the Napoleonic Wars, and its founder, Jan Ritz, took significant steps to rebuild the herd. In the 20th century, the stud suffered extensive damage during both World Wars but began to recover after 1946. In 1969, the first Arabian horse auction was organized, contributing to the stud's international renown. In the 21st century, its prestige grew thanks to the Pride of Poland auctions, attracting breeders from around the world. In 2015, a record profit was achieved when the mare Pepita was sold for €1.4 million. However, in recent years, the management of the stud has been subject to controversy, which has affected its reputation. This place not only breeds magnificent horses but also serves as an important element of Polish equestrian culture, aiming to promote and preserve unique genetic lines of Arabian horses. Interestingly, many horses leaving Janów, such as the stallion Witeź II, have become legends in other countries.
