The Janowo Commune, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in Nidzica County, was established on January 13, 1870, when the town of Janowo lost its town rights and was transformed into a rural commune. In the interwar period, the commune was part of Przasnysz County in the Warsaw Voivodeship and remained under the same administration after World War II. Comprising 14 village councils (sołectwa) and several smaller settlements, the Janowo Commune covers an area of 191.56 km², a significant portion of which is forest (50%) and agricultural land (32%). In 2004, the commune had a population of 2,885, which decreased to 2,654 by 2019. A notable feature of the commune's cultural landscape is the Wojciech Bogumił Jastrzębowski Honorary Badge, awarded for contributions to the development of the commune in various fields. Janowo Commune borders other communes, including Chorzele and Nidzica, and its rural architecture reflects traditional styles, showcasing local history and traditions.
