Jurkowice

Jurkowice is a village located in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in the Staszów County, within the administrative district of Bogoria, covering an area of 339 hectares. Geographically, it lies on the Sandomierz Upland, characterized by undulating terrain with ravines and small watercourses. The village has a rich history, with records dating back to 1418, when a man named Mikołaj was mentioned as its owner. In the 16th century, Jurkowice was documented by Jan Długosz. By 1787, the village's inhabitants were predominantly Roman Catholic, but there was also a Jewish community. In the 19th century, the village passed from donation holdings into the hands of Edward Białoskórski, who managed the estate but did not reside there permanently. In 1863, the Battle of Jurkowice took place, resulting in the deaths of Białoskórski's brothers. Over the years, Jurkowice changed owners multiple times, including Wilhelm Konstanty Kuksza, who in the 20th century managed the farm and supported the development of local infrastructure. A valuable feature of the landscape is the 19th-century manor park, which is listed in the register of historical monuments. Jurkowice also boasts natural resources, primarily dolomite deposits, which are used in the production of construction aggregates. Despite the scarcity of larger resources, dolomite is found here in significant quantities. After World War II, the Kuksza estate was socialized, and an agricultural production cooperative was established on its basis. The village maintains its local traditions and history, which contribute to its unique character. It is also worth mentioning the war cemetery in the hamlet of Samotnia, where legionnaires are buried. Important county roads run through the village, facilitating transportation. With its historical monuments, rich history, and mineral resources, Jurkowice stands as an interesting location within the region.
