The Municipality of Kętrzyn, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, within Kętrzyn County, boasts a rich history and diverse geographical structure. From 1975 to 1998, it belonged to the Olsztyn Voivodeship, and its administrative seat is in the town of Kętrzyn. The municipality covers an area of 285.73 km², of which 65% is agricultural land and 19% is forested. According to the 2011 National Census, the population was 8,439, which decreased to 8,230 by the end of 2019. A significant feature of the municipality is the Kętrzyn-Wilamowo Airport, which serves not only transportation needs but also functions as a tourist attraction. The municipality cooperates with the Association of Municipalities in Mauron, Brittany, highlighting its openness to international collaboration. Its territory includes numerous localities, with the largest being Karolewo and Wopławki. The area is known for notable historical sites such as Wilczy Szaniec (Wolf's Lair) and Gierłoż, which are associated with World War II history. In terms of education, the municipality has four schools, including the Agricultural Education Center in Karolewo. The religious life of the residents is reflected in Catholic churches in villages like Nakomiady and Wilkowo. The municipality is also rich in natural resources, featuring numerous natural monuments and habitats of the white stork, attracting ornithologists and nature enthusiasts. Between 1995 and 2004, an increase in the number of stork nests was observed in the area. Honorary citizens of the municipality include Franciszek Karwowski and Jean-Marie Desgrees du Lou, recognized for their contributions. The Municipality of Kętrzyn borders several other municipalities, fostering a network of local and regional cooperation.
