wikipedia
Stefan Starzyński Kabacki Forest is a woodland park and nature reserve located in the southern part of Warsaw, between Puławska and Łukasza Drewny streets, in the Ursynów district. The forest takes its name from the village of Kabaty, and its history dates back to the 16th century when the area was part of the Wilanów estate owned by prominent noble families such as the Sobieskis, Potockis, and Branickis. In 1938, the forest was purchased by the Warsaw City Council, which helped protect this valuable ecosystem from urban development. Established in 1980, the reserve covers an area of 903.6 hectares and aims to preserve the natural environment and landscape of Warsaw. It is home to many ancient trees, including protected natural monuments. The forest is characterized by rich biodiversity, with numerous rare species of flora and fauna. Visitors can spot roe deer, wild boars, and various bird species such as buzzards and tawny owls. Despite significant wartime losses and ongoing anthropogenic pressure, the area has managed to retain its valuable ecological resources. The reserve also features historical sites, including remnants of the former Polish Armed Forces General Staff, now used by the Air Operations Center. Additionally, the forest contains partisan graves from World War II and memorial plaques honoring the victims of executions. In 1987, the area witnessed the tragic LOT Polish Airlines flight disaster, which claimed 183 lives and left a lasting mark on the history of the site. Kabacki Forest is not only a valuable natural area but also a space rich in history and culture, making it a popular destination for recreation and environmental education among Warsaw residents.
