Karczew

The Karczew municipality, located in the Masovian Voivodeship within the Otwock County, is an administrative unit with a rich history dating back to the times of World War I. It was established on December 16, 1916, from the area of the former Otwock municipality and was initially associated with the Warsaw County. Architecturally, the municipality blends rural and urban elements, creating a space where traditional contemporary structures meet modernity. The municipality comprises 15 villages, each with its unique characteristics. It features a diverse land structure, with 58% of the area dedicated to agricultural land and 24% to forest land, reflecting the local agricultural culture and proximity to nature. The urban-rural atmosphere of the municipality is evident in its local culture, exemplified by the activities of volunteer fire departments, which are a vital part of the community in Karczew, Łukówiec, and Otwock Wielki. The municipality also boasts attractive natural and recreational features, including extensive forested areas. The history of Karczew is marked by numerous administrative changes that took place in the 20th century, including reorganizations at the level of village clusters and municipalities. After World War II, Karczew retained its administrative affiliation, and in 1958, it gained urban rights as a settlement. Over the years, the municipal leadership has evolved, reflecting various terms of office for the mayor and chairpersons of the Municipal Council. The Karczew municipality is surrounded by other units, such as Celestynów and Góra Kalwaria, fostering regional connections.
