Karniewo Commune, located in the Masovian Voivodeship, is one of the rural municipalities of Maków County. Its administrative seat is the village of Karniewo. Historically, between 1975 and 1998, the commune was part of the Ciechanów Voivodeship. Covering an area of 129.38 km², 87% of which is agricultural land, it is home to approximately 5,459 residents (data as of June 30, 2004). The commune plays a significant role in the region, accounting for 12.15% of the total area of Maków County. The demographic structure of its inhabitants and their history are closely tied to traditional agriculture, which has a profound influence on the local culture.
During the Third Polish Republic, the mayors (wójt) of the commune were Józef Andrzej Stopa, serving terms I to V (1990–2010), and Michał Wojciech Jasiński, serving terms VI to VII (2010–2018). The commune consists of 32 village administrative units (sołectwa), including settlements such as Baraniec, Chełchy, Krzemień, and Wronowo. There are also villages without formal sołectwo status, such as Chełchy-Jakusy.
