Koziny

Koziny is a housing estate in western Łódź, located in the Polesia area, inhabited by approximately 10,930 people as of 2014. The boundaries of the estate are defined by Drewnowska and Srebrzyńska Streets, the area of the Old Cemetery, and the railway tracks of the former Warsaw-Kaliska Railway. Koziny did not have a previously distinct geodetic form, and its administrative regulation took place in the early 1990s. The history of Koziny dates back to the 15th century when the area was part of a communal forest. Over the centuries, the forest was exploited—cleared areas were transformed into orchards and gardens. In the 19th century, a villa was built here for the industrialist Izrael Poznański, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the estate began to transform into an industrial area with the establishment of the first factories and the implementation of urban plans. During the interwar period, infrastructure development began, and trams started running to Koziny, increasing its attractiveness. After World War II, in the 1960s, intensive construction took place, resulting in the development of housing estates, often ignoring the historical context of the area. Koziny has retained its character through transformations that encompassed both housing and industry. Recreational areas are still present, and connectivity with other parts of Łódź is provided by numerous streets, tram, and bus lines. An interesting fact is that the Hornberger family, German residents of Łódź, has a deeply rooted history in Koziny, and their memoirs were published in Polish translation in 2010, recalling the historical pulse of this place. The Neighborhood Council, located at Długosza Street, plays a significant role in local governance, and the estate as a whole combines both architectural heritage and the aspirations of contemporary residents, making Koziny an interesting part of Łódź.
