wikipedia
Magnuszew, located in the Masovian Voivodeship, Kozienice County, gained city status in 2024. The history of the town dates back to the 12th century when it was founded by the Masovian count Magnus. From the 13th century, Magnuszew was owned by the Powała family, who adopted the surname Magnuszewski. In 1377, it was granted Magdeburg town rights, which was related to the development of settlement and trade, as well as its location on an important trade route. The town lost its city rights twice—in 1576 due to war damage, and then in 1870. Ultimately, its city status was restored in 1776. The town struggled with numerous fires, floods, and epidemics, which contributed to its impoverishment. During World War II, the Germans established a ghetto in Magnuszew, and as a result of military operations in 1945, the town suffered significant destruction. After administrative transformations in 1975, Magnuszew became the seat of the municipality and local administrative district. Among the town's architectural monuments, the late Baroque parish church of St. John the Baptist from the 18th century, a 19th-century bell tower, and an inn from the same period stand out. Magnuszew also holds historical significance as the site of battles for the Warecko-Magnuszewski Bridgehead, commemorated by a monument in the area. Interestingly, Magnuszew was recognized as a health resort between 1974 and 2005 due to the discovery of mineral calcium chloride brines, although no health resort facility was established here. The town has a rich cultural life; the Volunteer Fire Department, the Municipal Public Library, and the Society of Lovers of the Magnuszew Land are active, and the local periodical "W Naszej Gminie" has been published since 2008. In sports, the LZS Magnuszew sports club operates a football section. Despite modest resources, Magnuszew still retains its unique identity and historical heritage, remaining an important point on the map of Masovia.
