wikipedia
Welnowiec, a district of Katowice, boasts a rich history dating back to the 17th century. In its early years, the settlement was primarily agricultural, but a dynamic industrial development, especially in mining and metallurgy, began in the 18th century with the establishment of the first mines and smelters, such as "Hohenlohe." In 1924, the municipality of Welnowiec was created, which was incorporated into Katowice in 1951. Welnowiec is home to the Kolejarz Sports Center, used by the Kolejarz 24 Katowice Sports Club, founded in 1924. The area features diverse architecture, ranging from industrial buildings to residential colonies from the late 19th century, including the structures of the "Alfred" shaft. The largest green area is Alfred's Grove, and Welnowiec Park serves as an important recreational space. Two sites in Welnowiec are listed in the register of historical monuments: the historic building of the Court of Appeal and the former hall of distillation furnaces. Welnowiec is also a significant educational hub, with a historical school that was transformed into a Polish institution in 1922. Transportation in Welnowiec is well-developed; it is traversed by W. Korfanty Avenue, as well as tram and bus lines connecting the district with other parts of Katowice and Siemianowice Śląskie. Welnowiec is a place with a rich history, architectural diversity, and vibrant sports and cultural activities.
