Międzyrzec Podlaski is a town in the Lublin Voivodeship, known for its rich history dating back to prehistoric times. The first human settlements appeared here as early as the Neolithic period, and Międzyrzec obtained its town rights in 1918, after previously being granted the status of a private town before 1447. Located in the historical region of Podlasie, the town has been part of various administrative units over the centuries, which is linked to its dynamic development. In the 15th century, the Old Town Market Square was established, and in 1477, the Church of St. Nicholas was built. Międzyrzec became a center for pottery, brewing, and bristle-making, contributing to its economic growth. The town boasts numerous monuments, including churches, rectories, the former railway station, and cemeteries, among them a Jewish cemetery (kirkut) with the oldest matzevah dating back to 1706. It combines elements of both sacred and secular architecture. Międzyrzec Podlaski has witnessed many historical events, including raids by Swedish and Russian troops, as well as World War II, during which a ghetto for Jews was established here. After the war, the town developed as a regional center, offering various services and industries, including agri-food and clothing. Today, Międzyrzec Podlaski has a well-developed transport infrastructure, including bypass roads and a railway station on an international route. Culture thrives thanks to the Municipal Cultural Center, which hosts a variety of artistic events. Sports play an important role, with a stadium and various recreational facilities, as well as the activity of local associations. The town engages in extensive international cooperation, partnering with cities such as Thouars in France and Petach Tikva in Israel.
