wikipedia
Mikołajki, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, is a charming town known as the sailing capital of Poland, situated in the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes. The history of Mikołajki dates back to the Middle Ages; the settlement was likely established on the site of an Old Prussian village, with the first written records mentioning it in 1444. The town's name derives from St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the local church. In 1726, Mikołajki was granted town rights, which contributed to its development. Architecturally, the town is dominated by the classicist Evangelical-Augsburg Church from 1842 and the neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Rosary from 1910. The town enchants visitors with its picturesque landscapes along Lakes Tałty and Mikołajskie, which were once separate bodies of water connected by a stream. Mikołajki is also an important point on the tourist map, offering numerous attractions such as the Łuknajno Lake Nature Reserve, the Museum of Polish Reformation, the sailing ship "Chopin," and various accommodations ranging from hotels to guesthouses. Interestingly, during the interwar period, Mikołajki gained fame as a tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over Germany and Poland. During World War II, the town hosted an Abwehr outpost, and after the war, Mikołajki quickly adapted to the new realities, transforming into both an industrial and tourist center. After 1945, following border changes, residents of German origin were displaced, and Poles, including those from the Eastern Borderlands, settled in their place. Today, Mikołajki is known not only for its natural beauty but also for hosting various sporting events such as the Rally of Poland, as well as for its multicultural religious activities, which include Catholic, Evangelical, and Pentecostal churches. In 2016, a modern footbridge was built over the strait between Lakes Tałty and Mikołajskie, becoming one of the town's symbols. With its rich cultural and historical heritage, Mikołajki attracts tourists from all over the world, offering them unforgettable views and a wide range of attractions.
