wikipedia
Millennium Park in Sosnowiec is a modern urban park covering an area of 102 hectares, located in the Milowice district, adjacent to Milowice Park and Poniatowski Park. It was established on the site of former spoil heaps and excavations of the decommissioned Saturn coal mine. The park is characterized by anthropogenic afforestation and a well-developed ecosystem, including small ponds overgrown with aquatic vegetation. It offers attractive recreational trails, including cycling routes, and connects with other green areas in Sosnowiec and Katowice. The history of the park dates back to the 1930s, when the area was used as sandpits and landfills. Within the park, traces of former mines and diverse tree stands can be found. The revitalization of the park, completed in 2021, led to the planting of 11,000 new trees and shrubs and the creation of educational paths. Importantly, the park is home to rare species of plants and animals, including orchids and amphibians. Architecturally, the park features a network of gravel-surfaced alleys and rest areas. It regularly hosts running events, including half-marathons and cycling competitions. Thus, Millennium Park is not only a recreational space but also a place where history, ecology, and culture intertwine, offering unique attractions for residents and tourists.
