wikipedia
Modlnica is a village located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, within the administrative district of Wielka Wieś, known for its rich history and valuable monuments. Settlement in this region dates back to the Neolithic period (4500–1650 BCE), and the first written mention of Modlnica comes from 1254. Local legends are associated with the figure of St. Adalbert (św. Wojciech), suggesting that the area was once a pagan temple site. Modlnica is home to a wooden church dedicated to St. Adalbert, dating back to the second half of the 16th century, and an 18th-century bell tower with preserved bells from 1492 and 1542. Another architectural treasure is the manor complex from the second half of the 18th century, including a park with ancient trees, which was owned by the Konopka family. During the interwar period, the manor served as a cultural hub, supporting local artistic initiatives, including the work of Oskar Kolberg. In 1820, a primary school was established in Modlnica, and it was expanded in 1929 thanks to the efforts of Józef Noga. Archaeological discoveries, such as a Lusatian culture burial ground from the 6th century BCE, further confirm centuries of human presence in the area. Modlnica, situated at the intersection of tradition and modernity, is a place where history, architecture, and culture blend into a harmonious whole, and its residents continue to uphold local traditions. Today, the village has approximately 2,533 inhabitants (2022) and is home to both Roman Catholic and Jehovah's Witness communities. Other preserved monuments include the Chapel of St. Adalbert and a former Austrian customs chamber. With its rich history and architecture, Modlnica is a significant point on the cultural map of the region.
