wikipedia
The Municipal Museum "Gerhart Hauptmann House" is located in Jagniątkowo, a district of Jelenia Góra, in a historic house built in 1901 according to the design of German architect Hans Grisebach. After World War II, the site underwent various conceptual changes regarding its use and served as the "Warszawianka" Children's Holiday Center until 1997. It was not until 2005, thanks to the efforts of Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Helmut Kohl, that the facility gained museum status, becoming an institution dedicated to preserving the multicultural heritage of Lower Silesia. The museum aims to store and make accessible the legacy of Gerhart Hauptmann, a Nobel Prize winner and one of the most important German writers of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibits include the author's personal items, letters, and first editions of his literary works, allowing for a deeper understanding of his creative output and life. The building's architecture, reflecting the elegance and style of the fin de siècle, attracts art and history enthusiasts, and the museum itself is an important point on the cultural map of the region, fostering intercultural dialogue and the exploration of local literary traditions. An interesting fact is that Hauptmann spent many years in this house, and his work was strongly connected with Lower Silesia, further emphasizing the significance of this place as a cultural and educational center.
