wikipedia
The Municipal Weigh House in Görlitz, known as Die Waage, is a Renaissance building located at Lower Market Square 14, completing the row of structures known as "Zeile." Its current form is the result of a reconstruction in 1600 of a Gothic building from 1453, of which only the cellars have been preserved. The reconstruction was carried out by Jonas Rosskopf, the grandson of the Silesian architect Wendel Rosskopf. The building features a simple Renaissance design and an irregular shape, comprising four stories. The lower level is adorned with console decorations in the form of masks, representing individuals associated with its construction, including Jonas Rosskopf and his father Wendel. The consoles are supported by pilasters, which are connected by pointed arches, emphasizing the Renaissance style of the structure. A passage once existed along the southwest–northeast axis, where a fish market was held, highlighting the commercial significance of this location. The interior of the building is decorated with painted Baroque wooden ceilings, while the ground floor showcases late Gothic vaults, underscoring the architectural richness and historical value of the site. Thus, the Municipal Weigh House is not only a valuable example of Renaissance architecture but also an important element of Görlitz's local commercial history and cultural heritage.
